Matchups
Vs Cassian Yellow 1-0
Same opponent that I lost to in Set 3 TWI Weekly Recap #11 - https://www.lumimouse.com/i/155282281/vs-cassian-yellow.
They did some misplays when they should've attacked first instead of playing a unit.
They played Outmaneuver on my leader flip turn and it prevented a lot of damage, as it exhausted my Jango leader, two ISB Agents, and a Crafty Smuggler. But they didn’t really have a board to capitalize off that, so I eventually out-aggro’d them.
Vs Bossk Blue 1-0
We pre-sided.
They had an early Death Mark bounty trigger via a Turn2 Merciless Contest on my Turn1 Crafty Smuggler. They Entrenched my Jango on the leader flip turn. I removed Entrenched with my Disabling Fang Fighter the following turn. I was considering saving it to remove a bounty, but I was like “might as well remove Entrenched, and get the damage in with Jango while I still can.”
I think they later Superlaser Blast’d, and I did the Unnatural Life + Ruthless Raider combo for lethal.
Vs Qi'Ra ECL 1-0
We pre-sided.
I had a relatively weak early game. They ramped via Resupply on Turn2. There was a turn where I didn’t really have any good plays aside from playing a Lurking TIE Phantom while they had an existing Devastating Gunship.
Came down to a base race on their Resource10 turn / my Resource9 turn, I think.
The end board state was them having an injured Gideon Hask with 1 experience token and an Avenger; I had a Greedo, a 4-LOM, a Ruthless Raider, and a Disabling Fang Fighter.
They had initiative and started off ECL’ing their Lom Pyke to kill my 4-LOM, placing a shield onto their Gideon Hask and my Greedo. Gideon Hask gets another experience token.
I thought for a long time. I had a Change of Heart, Unnatural Life, and a Disabling Fang Figher in hand. I decided to sacrifice my Ruthless Raider into their Avenger, tapping it down, killed their Lom Pyke (in hindsight, popping Gideon Hask’s shield might have been a technically better play, but it wouldn’t have affected the outcome). Now Gideon Hask has 3 experience tokens.
Their Gideon Hask hits me for 8. I hit their base with Disabling Fang Fighter. They had like 6 resources open, but they claimed initiative . I hit their base with Greedo and had lethal via Unnatural Life + Ruthless Raider combo.
In the post-match discussion:
They revealed that their hand was a Hylobon Enforcer and a Reinforcement Walker. We talked about their play of ECL’ing Lom Pyke to kill my 4-LOM saves them more hp than playing a Reinforcement Walker to heal 3.
I talked about my play line of Change of Heart’ing their Avenger, but I was afraid if they have a removal spell for it and I would basically die to their buffed up Gideon Hask in one action the following turn.
Vs Luke ECL 0-1
We pre-sided.
Res2 Turn: I started with a Crafty Smuggler, they had a Maz Kanata + Luke’s shield start.
Res3 Turn: I hit their base with Crafty Smuggler, they played Concord Dawn Interceptors (Maz Kanata is now 2/2). I played an Elite P-38 Starfighter, pinging their Concord Dawn Interceptors. They hit my base with their 2/2 Maz Kanata. I Tarkintown'd their Concord Dawn Interceptors, they claimed initiative.
Res4 Turn: They played Bright Hope (Maz Kanata is now 3/3). I made a questionable play/misplay, where I traded shields with their Maz Kanata with my Crafty Smuggler, hoping their Maz Kanata would hit my base and I could finish off their Maz Kanata with my 4-LOM. Unfortunately, they killed my Crafty Smuggler, so my 4-LOM did a lot of overkill on their Maz Kanata.
End game board state is they have a Luke Skywalker unit and a Home One. I had a Ruthless Raider, Disabling Fang Fighter, Greedo and an ISB Agent. They hit my base with Home One. I hit their Luke Skywalker unit with my ISB Agent, Jango leader effect tapping it down. They played a Redemption, no heal. Even with my Sneak Attack + Ruthless Raider play, I was off by about 4 damage. They have lethal with one action in the following turn.
Conclusion and Our Twin Suns Experience
It was my first time playing in the Luke ECL matchup and I went into it thinking that it should be a relatively even/slightly unfavorable matchup. It is a bit annoying to go against Blue/Green Heroism decks as they have access to Concord Dawn Interceptors and Bright Hope.
I’ve been pre-siding more as I’m lowkey highkey tryharding to win more packs lol (Kevin, CBG owner, was allowing any of the Set3 TWI packs prizing to be exchanged for Set4 JTL packs, so that’s pretty cool on Kevin’s part. Though not sure if it was a one-time thing or going forward until Set 4 is released).
After the weekly, we had three full Twin Suns pods running + 1 player on standby (Alyssa). That was our first time playing Twin Suns in a pod of four players (previously CBG did a 1v1 Twin Suns weekly in the weeks right before Set 2 was released), and it was pretty fun ☀️☀️.
The night before the weekly, I was prompted by a player from CBG to bring a Twin Suns deck. I was kind of hesitant as I’m a relatively competitive player, so playing without any rewards on the line is generally kind of whatever to me. Then I thought eff it, I didn’t want to miss out on the social experience, so I started building decks for us on SWUDB first and then getting the cards and sleeving them. One of the reasons for us (mostly me tbh) to get into TCGs is for the social aspect.
Alyssa played a total of one game (she played Leia/Sabine Yellow, basically a rebels deck) and sat out while I played two games (I played Set3 Chancellor Palpatine/Chewbacca Green, just a good stuff deck).
Yup, it’s a fun format, lots of politicking as expected.
