12/1 - Krazy Nick’s Games
Note already written about the weekly experience here:
12/3 - Cardboard Games
Format: optional pre-siding, Bo1, 5 rounds, 24 players; https://melee.gg/Tournament/View/184303
I went 4-1. Alyssa went 3-2.
Deck - Qi’Ra Blue
This was a mono blue villainy homebrew, but it basically is the typical/expected blue control shell. I’ve playtested this deck only one evening against Alyssa.
I pre-sided for two games. None of my opponents did, except for the achievement hunting player.
Matchups
Vs Yoda Security Complex 0-1
I pre-sided. My opponent told me that they were going for the achievements (what achievements are), so I knew that their deck wasn’t optimal.
I thought I had a decent start, but didn’t draw into late game / removals. They did a You’re My Only Hope into Obi-Wan on the Resource 5 turn. I killed it with units and the Obi-Wan’s buff went onto their Rose Tico, which I later Power of the Side’d. I did play two Vigilance to shield & mill, but I later got overwhelmed by their units. I can’t recall what turns, but they did also play Finn and Droideka Security for the achievement tasks.
The game went to time and my base had 25 damage and they had 0 damage. Us going into time made me more wary to try to play faster in the next games.
Ngl, this game lowkey tilted me. I was so flabbergasted afterwards on how I lost to an achievement hunting deck and made me question this deck, my resourcing, my plays, etc.
Vs Wat Red 1-0
[This CBG regular hasn’t built their Set 3 deck yet, so I lent this player my Wat Red deck for use this weekly]
I had a strong start (shielded Pyke Sentinel) and was able to effectively board control.
Interjection: We had a fellow CBG’r practicing judging for their judge license tonight. We called them for a question we already knew the answer to just to test them - If I have a Snoke and my opponent had two units, can my opponent play Coruscant Guard and trigger/resolve its Coordinate/Ambush ability?
[Find out the answer at the bottom of this article :D]
Vs Obi Wan Yellow 1-0
On the resource 4 turn, my opponent played a Jedi Lightsaber on Grogu then killed my unshielded The Client. I didn’t want to play a ground unit just for it to die the following turn, so I just took initiative (I floated 4 resources), and played Vanquish on their upgraded Grogu.
They later played a Jedi Lightsaber on Ahsoka, but I was able to just Power of the Dark Side it.
Vs Jango Yellow 1-0
Turn1: I played Inferno Four. They took initiative. I asked why they didn't mulligan, they said the rest of the cards were good. This made me suspect they had like two Cunnings.
Turn2: They played Toro Calican, I responded with Power of the Dark Side.
Turn3: They played Boba Fett, I played a 5/5 Lieutenant Childsen.
Turn4: They played Cunning, mistakenly thinking it could bounce my Lieutenant Childsen. They ended up using Cunning to +4/+0 buff their Boba Fett and exhaust both my Inferno Four and Lieutenant Childsen. I said sorry and Power of the Dark Side’d their Boba Fett.
I basically had total board control.
Vs Jango Red 1-0
I pre-sided - took out one card from main, added one card from side deck.
Turn1: They mulligan’d to a no Turn1 play. I played Dr. Pershing.
Turn2: They played Lurking TIE Phantom, I played Perilous Position.
Turn3: They played Triple Dark Raid -> Fett’s Firespray, I played a 6/6 Lieutenant Childsen
Lieutenant Childsen ended up doing like 18 damage to their base.
We briefly discussed the Jango Red vs control matchup. Then we played another game, which I lost. They had an on-curve Lurking TIE Phantom, which I didn’t have an answer to. My only drawn answers to space were Takedown, Vanquish, and Vigilance.
Conclusion
I’m generally biased toward Villainy for mono Blue decks, because I greatly value cards like Lieutenant Childsen, Power of the Dark Side, and Avenger that don’t really have an equivalent in the Heroism variants. But the blue villain leader options are kinda meh. Pros and cons ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
[Answer: Coruscant Guard dies before the Coordinate/Ambush triggers afaik.]
