Our Second and Last Set 2 Store Showdown - Kingslayer Lake Forest
I won the Store Showdown, Alyssa made Top4. I also met a reader!
Kingslayer Lake Forest Store Showdown 10/26, 14 players

[Late post, my editor was sick recently] Obviously this post is going to have very little meta relevance due to how late the Store Showdown was within the set and due to the event's Bo1 structure. This post is mostly for personal documentation. Also, it was so cool when my Round 3 opponent asked if I was the one with the Substack and said that they read some of my stuff! đŸ˜€

Event Info

It’s a Bo1 format, so this changes what deck one should bring to the event. Also, 100% prizing! 14 players total - 4 Swiss Rounds and Top Cut of 8.

Let’s talk about the deck
Notable changes from Las Vegas PQ deck list:
+1 Cartle Spacer
+1 Sneak Attack
+1 Punishing One
+1 Lurking TIE Phantom
+1 Imperial Interceptor
+1 TIE Advanced
-2 Death Star Stormtrooper
-1 Unrefusable Offer
-2 Boba Fett
-1 Waylay
Reasoning: Because it’s Bo1 format, decks should be more well-rounded. Death Star Stormtrooper is a bit weak after like the first two turns. Adding Imperial Interceptor and TIE Advanced for toolbox utility via Triple Dark Raid.
Matchups
Cad Blue 1-0
My opponent was a kid who asked me to help them shuffle their deck; I piled shuffled. I don’t think he ever remembered to trigger Cad’s ability without me reminding him.
Palp Green 1-0
Opponent didn’t know this event was Bo1, but they did end up still making Top 8.
Sabine ECL 1-0
Had the Turn1 Daring Raid play.
Sabine ECL 0-1 (vs Alyssa)
We were the only undefeated 3-0, so this last match didn’t really matter as we both were guaranteed for Top 8.
Interjection: After my 4th round concluded, I was spectating Table 2’s game (Sabine Jedha City vs Palp Green). Sabine had 17 damage on base, Palp had 29 damage. The Sabine player played Disabling Fang Fighter to remove Traitorous from a ready Wing-Leader’d Y-Wing, but the Sabine player mistakenly put it in the exhausted state on his side. The Palp player swung with 7 power Vader (buffed by Overwhelming Barrage earlier in the phase). They both miscounted base damage and thought that was game (it’s not, 17+7 = 24; 24 != 25), so they both started scooping up their hand/resource row. At this point, seeing that the game had already concluded due to them scooping up their cards, I mentioned how it wasn’t lethal and pointed out how the Y-Wing should be ready, which means Sabine could’ve won. They both reexamined the board state. I mentioned how technicly the game has already ended. There was some deliberation on what to do. The Palp player ended up giving the win to the Sabine player instead. I felt kinda bad, but the Palp player still made it into Top Cut, so not as bad.
Top Cut (open deck list):
Decks: 3x Sabine ECL, Sabine Jedha City, Kylo ECL, Palp Green, Boba1 Yellow, Boba1 Tarkintown
Quarterfinal: Kylo ECL 1-0
Opponent missed their Turn1 play.
Semifinal: Sabine ECL 1-0
It was the same opponent as Round3. On Turn2, he Wing Leader’d his Turn1’s A-Wing, I Waylayed it. He didn’t have Poe on Turn4.
Final: Sabine Jedha City 1-0
I Daring Raid his Turn1’s A-Wing into a two-drop. On Turn2, he played Falcon and killed my Turn1 two-drop and I played a Greedo. On Turn3, he played Sparked of Rebellion and picked Imperial Interceptor (I had Cartel Spacer, Force Choke, and Imperial Interceptor). At this point, the board was empty except for my Greedo (he had bounced his Falcon back). After he deployed Sabine, I played Force Choke (at which point, he commented that he should’ve Sparked that instead) and then I played Cartel Spacer. At one point, he Jetpack’d a readied Leia, I Cartel Spacer exhausted it. It wasn’t too close, I think I ended up having like 9 damage on my base.

Boba1 Tarkintown 1-0 (vs Jerry)
Top Cut (open deck list):

Semifinal: Sabine Jedha City 0-1
She said that she played loosey goosey this game and was just banking on me carrying.
Conclusion
Due to the Bo1 format, I expected to see mostly aggro/midrange decks, though Kingslayer Lake Forest weeklies normally have a lot of midrange/control decks and very little of aggro representation. I was somewhat surprised to not see Rey or Han2 decks.
And that’s a wrap for Set 2, onto Set 3!
