2/04 - Cardboard Games Weekly
Format: optional pre-siding, Bo1, 5 rounds, 18 players; https://melee.gg/Tournament/View/224920
Alyssa went 2-3, I went 5-0.
Deck - Jango Tarkintown
There are a few variations of this leader/base deck list around, but my deck is pretty standard, not running anything too spicy.
Matchups
Vs Han2 Yellow 1-0
A bit of a meme-ish deck, as they were running cards like Let the Wookiee Win. They tried to base race me as well with their Green Squadron A-Wings, but I later gained board control.
Vs Cad Tarkintown 1-0
Don’t remember much, but it was a pretty lopsided match. I think I had a Lurking TIE Phantom on Turn2, which they never had an answer to, so it basically shut down their Cad’s pings.
Vs Han1 Green 1-0
Res2 Turn: I played Greedo, they played Set3 R2-D2 (discarded a Tranquility for the effect).
Res3 Turn: I played Elite P-38 Starfighter, pinging and tapping down their R2-D2, they played Sundari Peacekeeper. I had considered using Greedo to hit their Sundari Peacekeeper and RNG it or Tarkintown it, but I decided to hit their base instead.
Res4 Turn: They used R2-D2 to kill my Greedo, I RNG’d Greedo’s effect, it hit, so I dealt 2dmg and tapped down their Sundari Peacekeeper. I played Crafty Smuggler. They played Falcon1. I attacked with Elite P-38 Starfighter. They attacked my base with their Falcon1. I played ISB Agent, showed a Daring Raid and pinged their Sundari Peacekeeper. They claimed. I Daring Raid’d their Sundari Peacekeeper to finish it off.
Res5 turn: They bounced back their Falcon1 during the regroup phase. They played Tech, I flipped my Jango Leader, they leader tapped to ramp to six resources. Jango hit base. They flipped their Han leader. I sacrificed ISB Agent to tap down their Han leader. They played Falcon1. I hit their base with Elite P-38 Starfighter. They hit my base with Falcon1. I played a Zuckuss. They claimed initiative. I hit their Tech with my Crafty Smuggler, popping its shield, then Tarkintown’d their Tech.
Res6 turn: They used their prior leader ramp ability to pay for Falcon1 tax. Their Han leader hits my base, so they went up to 7 ready resources. I hit their base with Zuckuss, fearing the Han Solo unit. They U-Wing Reinforcement into Tranquility, bringing back a Tranquility (discarded via Turn1’s R2-D2) into their hand. I hit their base with Elite P-38 Starfighter. Later in the turn, after playing an Armed to the Teeth, I basically represented lethal damage with my board.
In the post-match discussion:
I mentioned how they could’ve traded their Falcon with my Elite P-38 Starfighter way earlier in the game.
They also mentioned how they should’ve pulled out a Luke Skywalker from their U-Wing Reinforcement instead of Tranquility.
Interjection: This player is a longtime reader and told me to say hi to the readers on their behalf, so I guess that’s that lol.
Vs Yoda Green 1-0
[We pre-sided; this is the Pasadena PQ Finalist / Hawaii PQ Champion]
Res2 Turn: They played Battlefield Marine, I played Cartel Spacer.
Res3 Turn: They played Concord Dawn Interceptors, I played Elite P-38 Starfighter, pinged their Concord Dawn Interceptors, their Battlefield Marine hit my base, I Tarkintown’d their Concord Dawn Interceptors, they used Yoda leader ability, I hit their base with my Cartel Spacer. They claimed initiative.
Res4 Turn: They Perilous Position’d my Elite P-38 Starfighter. I use Elite P-38 Starfighter’s ping on their Battlefield Marine and tapped it down. They used Yoda’s leader ability. I hit their base with Cartel Spacer. I later 4-LOM’d their Battlefield Marine.
Res5 Turn: They played Razor Crest, bringing back their Perilous Position. I deployed Jango leader, they claimed, I played Armed to the Teeth on Jango, I attacked with Jango, buffing Cartel Spacer with Armed to the Teeth’s effect, then traded the Cartel Spacer with their Razor Crest. I then played a Disabling Fang Fighter, no effect. [I was heavily contemplating to just hit their base with the buffed Cartel Spacer, but decided to just get ride of Razor Crest to deny future restores.]
Res6 Turn: They Perilous Position’d my 4-LOM. I hit their base with my Jango, buffing Disabling Fang Fighter with Armed to the Teeth’s effect. They played Concord Dawn Interceptors. I Waylay’d it, knowing that I’d be floating 3 resources (don’t quite remember my hand if I could’ve been more resource efficient this turn), because I didn’t want my buffed Disabling Fang Fighter to be wasted on being traded away with a Concord Dawn Interceptors. They used Yoda leader ability. I hit their base with my buffed Disabling Fang Fighter.
Res7 Turn: They did a blind Yoda deploy, discarding a 4-cost event (iirc, I think it was Fell the Dragon?), defeating my Disabling Fang Fighter. I played a Ruthless Raider, tapping down their Yoda leader.
I don’t remember what exactly happened next, but we did reach to the Res10 turn. In between, I recall them hitting their Yoda leader into my Jango leader and Vigilance’ing to defeat my Jango leader and heal 5. They also later did a blind You’re my Only Hope’d into a Redemption, healing their base for 6. I think I did a similar play in Chula Vista PQ, where I sacrificed my Ruthless Raider into their Redemption, just to bring it back via Unnatural Life for lethal.
In the post-match discussion:
They mentioned how they didn’t have an optimal hand and was playing under-curve for a few turns, eg playing Perilous Position on the Res4 turn and playing Razor Crest on the Res5 turn. They mentioned how much value I got from the Armed to the Teeth.
We briefly talked about what we had sided in.
Vs Cad Tarkintown 1-0
Res2 Turn: They played Mercenary Gunship. I played Kylo’s TIE Silencer. (They’re off to a good start.)
Res3 Turn: They played Now There are Two of Them into Bossk, Cad’s 1dmg ping allocated to my Kylo’s TIE Silencer. I hit their base with my only unit. They hit my base with their Mercenary Gunship. I played Boba Fett. They Tarkintown’d my Kylo’s TIE Silencer. (They’re off to a great start, as now their events can start clearing any of my space units.)
Res4 Turn: I played an Elite P-38 Starfighter, pinging and tapping down their Bossk. I was so worried that they may have a Ma Klounkee, as that can basically clear my entire board with Bossk’s 2dmg and Cad’s ping. They hit my base with their Mercenary Gunship. I killed their Bossk with Boba Fett. They play 4-LOM, I allocated the Cad’s 1dmg ping to my Elite P-38 Starfighter, no ambush on their part.
Res5 Turn: I think I played a 4-LOM and traded with their 4-LOM? They attacked my base with their Mercenary Gunship. I deployed Jango leader. They played a Boba Fett, I allocated the Cad’s 1dmg ping to my Jango leader. I was considering whether to hit their Boba Fett with my Jango and then Tarkintown it, but decided to just hit their base. I think they just floated two resources this turn?
Res6 Turn: They attacked my base with their Boba Fett. I traded my Boba Fett with their Boba Fett. They deployed their Cad Bane leader. I Triple Dark Raid’ed into a Ruthless Raider, damaging and tapping down their Cad Bane Leader. I don’t quite remember, I think they just hit my base with their Mercenary Gunship? I then played an Armed to the Teeth on my Jango leader. I think they played a Punishing One, which I allocated the Cad’s 2dmg ping onto my Ruthless Raider. I hit their base with my Jango leader, buffing Ruthless Raider with Armed to the Teeth’s effect, which I hit their base with afterwards. My Elite P-38 Starfighter also hit their base afterwards.
Res7 Turn: I think they scooped after seeing what two cards they drew.
In the post-match discussion:
We talked about their Boba Fett attacking my base instead of finishing off my injured Boba Fett. They said that they thought I would trade into their Boba Fett, so they rather get the base damage in first. At the end, I’m pretty sure that whether they killed my Boba Fett or hit my base wouldn’t have affected things.
I also mentioned how scared I was of their Bossk, and they revealed that they didn’t draw into any events while it was alive.
Conclusion
Solid performance on my part tonight. I was a bit hesitant with the Han1 Green and Yoda Green matchups - I wasn’t sure of the matchups vs Han1 Green, and I’ve gotten 0-2’d vs a different Yoda Green player before at the Chula Vista PQ.
Alyssa was playing her typical Sabine ECL and lost to Cad Tarkintown (same opponent as my 5th round), lost to Han1 Green (same opponent as my 3rd round), and lost to Quinlan Tarkintown.
